ZAMBIA WELCOMES HIS EXCELENCE, PRESIDENT LEVY PATRICK MWANAWASA-SC YOUTHFUL APPOINTMENTS
LUSAKA, Dec. 26 - Development Partnership International-DPI- Zambia
chapter, wishes to thank President, Levy Mwanawasa, for his gesture to
the Zambian youths for appointing some productive young and youthful
professionals into various positions in government and other national
structures, most specifically, after the previous September 28
tripartite elections.
DPI acknowledges that as a result of the appointments, government is committed to meeting the challenge of addressing the problems of high poverty levels among youths through youth empowerment in the country.
The gesture shows government commitment towards implementation of some international charters declarations on youth in order to meet the Millennium Development Goals-MDGs by the year 2015.
We wish acknowledge the appointment of some of the productive young and youth professionals into government among them, Mpongwe MP Gabriel Namulambe, as full Minister of Sports, Youth and Child Development. This is in line with some international charters declarations that seeks governments to include youth participation in governance by involving the youths in decisions and policy making processes at all levels for national development and representation.
DPI views the president’s gesture of appointing young people even at state house as a welcome move as it demonstrates testimony of government commitment to youth empowerment in line with the recently held African Union Commission which passed and launched the African Youth Charter, the first of it’s kind and a strategic framework for youth development programming on the continent.
The Charter provides for virtually every area of youth needs including the role of youth to the development of the continent. It also seeks to unify the youth movement to contribute effectively to the continent’s development processes.
The president’s approach, therefore, has been applauded by DPI because it shows there is more positive things to be expected from government by the youth while the president has exhibited the important initial indicators to domesticate international charters declarations on youth.
Therefore, DPI wishes to challenge the youth in the country to access the National Youth Policy document which is an essential guiding tool for youth development initiatives and projects in the community. They should also start accessing the Constituency Development Fund which has been released. The youth must also take-up positive life patterns during this festive season.
